How I Approach Graphic Design Projects from Start to Finish

Introduction

The design process is often overlooked when people think about graphic design. Instead, they picture the end result, like a logo, a colour palette, or a website layout. But what matters just as much, if not more, is how the design process shapes everything behind the scenes. The process is where the real work happens.

Over time, I’ve built a system that helps me move from idea to final design in a way that’s clear, collaborative, and thoughtful. It’s the same design process I use for every branding or design project, whether big or small. Here’s how I approach graphic design projects from start to finish, from the first conversation to the final file.

When you fill out the short intake form on my contact page, it gives me a clear idea of your project details. After I take a look, I put together a proposal with the scope, timeline, and budget. We’ll work together to tweak it until it feels just right for you.

Once you’re happy with the proposal, I send over a contract and a welcome kit. The contract includes important info about licensing, so you know exactly what you own. At this stage, I ask for the first deposit to officially book your project. You can make the payment securely through my project management hub. The welcome kit explains what to expect along the way and introduces you to the hub where you’ll find all your files and where most of our communication happens.

To get things moving, I might send a few quick questions or small tasks your way. These help us start strong and keep everything on track throughout the design process.

From there, the project flows through three main phases. Strategy, Design, and Deliver. I’ll walk you through each step.

Step 1

Strategy

Good design starts with asking the right questions and understanding what the project really needs. This first step is crucial in the graphic design process.

This stage includes:

  • Clarifying goals

  • Learning about the target audience

  • Identifying what’s working and what’s not

  • Agreeing on a creative direction that fits your brand

  • Creating a mood board to align on look and feel

A strong strategy ensures that the design is both visually compelling and perfectly suited to your brand and audience.

Step 2

Design

Once the direction is clear, I start turning ideas into visuals. This part of the design process is all about creativity and collaboration.

This phase usually includes:

  • Creating a few concept options based on our agreed strategy

  • Sharing those concepts with notes explaining the reasoning

  • Collecting your feedback, discussing it, and refining the designs

  • Repeating this process until the design feels right

This part is a team effort. I bring design expertise, and you bring knowledge of your brand. Together, we create visuals that are not only attractive but meaningful and easy to use.

Step 3

Deliver

After the design is approved, I prepare the final files you’ll need to use your new brand confidently. This usually includes:

  • Your logo in multiple formats and variations

  • Design assets like social media graphics, print files, or templates (depending on the project scope)

  • A brand kit with your colour palette and either a style sheet or detailed style guide that includes font recommendations and where to get them, based on your budget

If you need ongoing support as you roll out your brand, I’m always here to help. Think of me as your design partner without the overhead of a full design team.

Why This Works

Why I Work This Way

Design projects can feel overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time working with a designer. Having a clear design process helps keep everything on track without limiting creativity.

This method leads to fewer surprises and better results,  designs that look great and work well.

If you’re thinking about working with a designer or just curious about the process, I hope this gives you a helpful overview.
