Building a Custom Design for Performance Recognition
Building on the internal initiative to recognize top-performing officers, the goal was to develop a custom patch that fits naturally within the unit’s existing visual system while standing apart as a unique marker of achievement. The primary challenge was translating the real-world seriousness of the offence into a design that carried genuine authority, ensuring the final piece felt earned and impactful.
The Strategy
Translating Speed and Authority Into Visuals
The design process began by experimenting with different shapes, testing how structural geometry could establish immediate authority. From there, the focus shifted heavily toward capturing movement and impact. I explored a wide range of typographic styles—comparing heavier weights and traditional script fonts against sharp, angular fonts to see what best communicated urgency and control. A critical part of the strategy also involved testing various layouts to figure out how to cleanly incorporate detailed copy without cluttering the aesthetic. A subdued, uniform-aligned colour palette was chosen to ensure the final piece remained professional and balanced.
THE IMPACT
Bringing Movement and Purpose to Life
To bring in a sense of motion, custom graphic elements like side lightning bolts were integrated to match the sharp lettering and add visual energy. Small details like the car icon and outer ring grounded the design securely in its purpose. The final vector artwork translated cleanly into a durable, high-quality patch built to hold up on daily uniforms giving officers a tangible badge of recognition that boosts team pride and morale.
